Digital X-Ray System

A representative from Carestream came to demonstrate their new Industrex HPX-1 Digital System for x-radiography. The system uses phosphor plates can be erased and reused thousands of times. The plates are available in a multitude of sizes and can be used in rigid or flexible cassettes. Once the plates are scanned, one can use the Industrex v4.0 Digital Viewing Software to analyze the resulting radiographs. I was amazed by the details that one could image using the systems’ edge filters. The software is very compatible with other programs, in that images can be exported in a multitude of file formats. One of the features that I particularly liked for conservation applications was the searchable metadata that one can attach to each image. This is not only important for documentation purposes, but it can save one from flipping through pages in a logbook trying to determine initial exposure settings. I only wish the systems were cheaper so more museums could afford the technology!
